Ethics in Practice

The Contract Pilots Association® Code of Ethics defines professional standards, not aspirations.

Contract pilots routinely operate in environments where financial pressure, informal expectations, and schedule urgency can compromise safety margins and regulatory clarity. Unlike employed crews or certificated operators, contract pilots often work without organizational safeguards such as dispatch systems, compliance departments, or institutional authority. Ethical judgment in contract aviation is therefore operational, not theoretical.

This Code provides a clear professional framework to support independent judgment, transparent communication, and defensible decision-making. It is intended for practical use—when establishing expectations with owners, communicating delays or cancellations, declining unsafe or unlawful requests, and maintaining professional boundaries under pressure.

This Code does not replace applicable laws, regulations, insurance requirements, or legal counsel. Rather, it establishes a shared ethical baseline by which members define acceptable conduct and mutual accountability within the contract pilot profession.

Membership signifies a voluntary commitment to these standards, recognizing that professionalism in contract aviation requires clarity, discipline, and the willingness to act in the interest of safety and integrity, even when doing so carries personal or financial cost.

Code of Ethics
  1. Safety as the Primary Duty. I will place the safety of flight, passengers, crew, and the public above schedule, cost, convenience, or external pressure.
  2. Professional Independence. I will exercise independent professional judgment and will not allow owners, passengers, employers, or financial incentives to compromise safe or lawful operations.
  3. Regulatory Compliance. I will comply with all applicable laws, regulations, and operating limitations and will not knowingly participate in or facilitate illegal charter, improper operations, or regulatory evasion.
  4. Honest Representation. I will accurately represent my qualifications, experience, currency, and limitations, and will not mislead clients, insurers, or other pilots regarding my competence or authority.
  5. Defined Scope of Responsibility. I recognize that I am an independent aviation professional—not a charter operator, compliance substitute, or legal shield—and I will clearly communicate the limits of my role.
  6. Risk Disclosure and Transparency. I will communicate material risks, operational concerns, and safety margins clearly and professionally, even when such disclosure may delay or cancel a flight.
  7. Right and Duty to Decline. I acknowledge my ethical duty to refuse, delay, or terminate a flight when conditions exceed acceptable safety, legal, or professional standards, without retaliation or coercion.
  8. Professional Conduct. I will conduct myself with integrity, discipline, and respect toward clients, passengers, fellow pilots, instructors, mechanics, regulators, and the public.
  9. Confidentiality and Trust. I will respect confidential information obtained through professional service, except where disclosure is required to prevent unsafe or unlawful activity.
  10. Continuous Professional Development. I will maintain proficiency, pursue ongoing education, and accept responsibility for staying current in the aircraft, environments, and operations I undertake.
