Contract Instructing in Africa

What Is a Contract Instructor?

A contract instructor is a qualified flight instructor who provides instructional services on a contract basis, rather than as a full-time employee of an aircraft owner, operator, or training organization. Contract instructors are commonly used across business and general aviation to support training,
mentoring, and proficiency needs.

Contract instructors often specialize in one or two specific aircraft types or in a particular field of instruction, such as upset recovery training, advanced avionics, or high-performance operations. This specialization allows focused, experience-based instruction tailored to the aircraft or mission.

Contract instruction may be performed full-time as an independent professional or on a supplemental basis, depending on the instructor’s experience, availability, and business structure.

Role of the Contract Instructor

Contract instructors typically provide:

  • Initial or recurrent training
  • Aircraft-specific transitions or differences training
  • Mentoring and operational coaching
  • Proficiency training and currency support
  • Avionics training focused on the operational use of newly installed avionics in conjunction with existing aircraft systems
  • Specialized instruction in defined disciplines (e.g., upset recovery training)

The scope of instruction is defined by the engagement and conducted in accordance with applicable FAA regulations.

Employment & Business Structure

Contract instructors may operate as individuals or through a business entity (such as an LLC). Business structure does not change regulatory responsibility, operational control, or insurance considerations.

The aircraft owner or operator retains operational control of the aircraft, while the contract instructor provides instruction within the agreed scope of work.

Regulatory Framework

Contract instruction is conducted under applicable FAA regulations, commonly including Parts 61 and 91. The use of a contract instructor does not alter the regulatory status of the operation.

Clear understanding of instructor qualifications and currency, aircraft airworthiness, and operational control is essential for compliant and effective instruction.

Professional Standards

Effective contract instruction relies on depth of experience, judgment, and specialization, not simply instructional authority. Many contract instructors deliberately limit their work to defined aircraft types or training disciplines to maintain consistency and instructional quality.

Credentialing and authorization help establish expectations and professional standards for contract instructors operating in diverse environments.

Purpose of Contract Instruction

Contract instruction provides flexibility without compromising standards. It allows aircraft owners and operators to access specialized instructional expertise when full-time staffing is impractical, while enabling instructors to deliver focused, experience-driven training within a disciplined professional framework
